From what we read in the Scriptures, not much is known about Saint Joseph. We know that his lineage is from Jacob, David and Solomon. We know that he was settled in Nazareth although his family and his ancestors come from the city of David, Bethlehem.

Most of all, we know that he was a good man and father to Jesus and Mary. Inspired by an Angel, he took Mary as his wife, despite being in the delicate situation of Jesus being born of the Holy Spirit. Again, inspired by an Angel, he saved the family by bringing them out of danger from King Herod into Egypt. We know all this from Scripture.

But how do we know what kind of father he was to Jesus?

There is a saying, “Like father, like son.” If Jesus turned out as good as He did. Which all will pretty much agree. That means that Joseph had a hand in imparting his qualities on to Jesus. Jesus was 100% human (as he was also 100% Divine), which means he walked, talked, ate, did all biological functions that a person would do. And not only was he physically human, but he was mentally and emotionally human as well. He felt the whole array of human emotions that a person could feel. He also had a personality that was unique to Him. He had a sense of humour and a work ethic. I am sure that Joseph had big influence on these aspects of Jesus; and not because Jesus needed Joseph’s influence, but because He allowed it and wanted it.

In addition, in the time of Jesus and Joseph, a father would impart to the son a trade or a craft. This would mean countless hours spent with between father and son. Imagine the life lessons, the conversations between the two.

I strongly believe that the man that Jesus became was influenced very much by the man that Saint Joseph was – not because He needed Joseph, but because He chose Joseph to father him. And that says a lot about the man that Joseph was.

Here is the challenge for today:

Pray this simple prayer to Saint Joseph today:

O Blessed Saint Joseph, faithful guardian and protector of virgins, to whom God entrusted Jesus and Mary, I implore you by the love which you did bear them, to preserve me from every defilement of soul and body, that I may always serve them in holiness and purity of love. Amen.
